Working Principle

  • During daylight, the LDR receives light. Its resistance is low, which prevents the capacitor (C1) from charging up enough to trigger the DIAC and TRIAC. As a result, the lamp remains OFF.
  • During nighttime (or low light conditions), the LDR’s resistance increases significantly. This allows the capacitor to charge through R1 and R2.
  • Once the capacitor’s voltage reaches the breakover voltage of the DIAC, the DIAC conducts, triggering the TRIAC.
  • The TRIAC then allows the AC supply to flow to the lamp, turning it ON.
  • The potentiometer (R1) can be adjusted to set the light intensity threshold at which the lamp turns ON or OFF.
